School Health Program: Mental Health Awareness and Coping Skills
On 31 January 2025, Young Leaders Collaboration for Global Health-Nepal (YLCGH-Nepal) conducted a workshop on Mental Health at Shree Siddhi Mandal Secondary School, Mahalaxmi, Lalitpur, as part of its ongoing School Health Program.
The workshop focused on creating a safe and supportive environment where students could learn about mental health, express their emotions, recognize everyday stressors, and explore practical strategies for maintaining emotional well-being. The session encouraged open participation and helped students understand that seeking support and talking about mental health are important components of a healthy life.
A key component of the workshop was the introduction of the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique, a simple practical exercise designed to help individuals reconnect with the present moment during periods of stress or emotional difficulty. Students actively participated in the exercise and responded enthusiastically to the interactive approach.
Through this initiative, YLCGH-Nepal aimed to strengthen mental health literacy among young people and equip students with practical skills that can support emotional well-being and resilience. The session highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces within schools where young minds can learn, express themselves, and access appropriate support.
Small steps toward awareness, expression, and coping can contribute to building a more mentally resilient generation.
