School Health Program: First Aid for Animal Bites and Rabies Prevention
On 20 August 2025, Young Leaders Collaboration for Global Health-Nepal (YLCGH-Nepal) conducted a School Health Education Session on First Aid for Animal Bites at Shree Bhanodaya School, Mahalaxmi, Lalitpur, engaging students from Grades 7 and 8.
The session aimed to equip young learners with essential knowledge and practical skills for responding appropriately to animal bites and preventing rabies. Students learned how rabies is transmitted, which animals can potentially carry the virus, and the importance of taking immediate and appropriate action following an animal bite.
Particular emphasis was placed on immediate first aid, including thoroughly washing the wound with soap and water, as well as understanding appropriate do’s and don’ts following a bite. Students were also introduced to the importance of seeking prompt medical care and completing recommended post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) when indicated.
The session adopted a peer-education approach, encouraging students to share accurate health information with their families and communities. By transforming students into informed health messengers, the program aimed to extend the impact of the session beyond the classroom and strengthen community awareness of rabies prevention.
Through this initiative, YLCGH-Nepal continued its commitment to practical, preventive, and youth-centered school health education, empowering young people with knowledge that can help protect themselves, their families, and their communities.
