Dengue Prevention School Health Project

2026-05-21

Objectives Educate students on dengue transmission, common symptoms, and severe warning signs. Identify Aedes mosquito breeding sites and teach methods to eliminate them. Promote personal protection measures (nets, repellents, clothing, environmental control). Encourage students to share knowledge with peers and family members to strengthen community awareness. Participants Grade: 7 students Total number of participants: 52 students Methodology The project used an interactive, assessment-driven approach across three phases: Phase 1: Pre-test A short pre-assessment was conducted to evaluate baseline knowledge regarding dengue transmission, symptoms, breeding sites, and preventive measures. The average pre-test score was 4.5/10, indicating limited prior awareness among many participants. Phase 2: Interactive Presentation & Discussion A presentation was delivered covering: Dengue transmission and the behavior of Aedes mosquitoes (daytime biting). Common symptoms and warning signs of severe dengue. Typical mosquito breeding sites and practical elimination measures such as covering water containers and removing stagnant water. Personal protection methods including mosquito nets, repellents, protective clothing, and environmental cleanliness. The session remained highly interactive, with students actively answering questions, identifying breeding sites from examples, and discussing preventive actions that could be implemented at home and within the school environment. Phase 3: Post-test Assessment The same questions from the pre-test were reviewed and discussed after the presentation to assess knowledge gained from the session. The average post-test score increased significantly to 8/10, demonstrating marked improvement in understanding. Additionally, five students achieved full marks (10/10) in the post-test assessment, reflecting excellent comprehension and engagement during the session. Outcomes Knowledge improvement: Students demonstrated substantial improvement, with average scores increasing from 4.5/10 to 8/10 following the session. Outstanding performance: Five students secured perfect scores in the post-test, indicating strong understanding of dengue prevention concepts. Practical awareness: Students expressed willingness to practice preventive measures such as eliminating standing water and spreading awareness among family members. Active participation: Students participated enthusiastically throughout the discussion and practical identification activities. Observations Students were attentive, cooperative, and actively engaged throughout the program. The large group size still maintained good interaction due to active participation from the students. Students showed particular interest in learning about the daytime biting habit of Aedes mosquitoes and the importance of preventing small stagnant water collections around homes and schools. Teachers were supportive and assisted in maintaining coordination during the session and assessments. Recommendations Include more visual demonstrations and practical activities in future sessions to strengthen long-term retention. Continue using pre-test and post-test assessments to objectively measure learning outcomes. Encourage selected students to act as peer educators to further expand awareness within the school community. Conclusion The Dengue Prevention project conducted at Shree Mahendra Adarsha Secondary School successfully improved students’ awareness regarding dengue transmission, symptoms, and preventive measures. The increase in average scores from 4.5/10 to 8/10 demonstrates the effectiveness of the educational intervention. The excellent performance of five students achieving full marks further highlighted the impact of the session. The activity promoted practical preventive actions and encouraged students to share knowledge within their households and communities. YLCGH Nepal expresses gratitude to the school administration, teachers, and students for their enthusiastic participation and support.
